An Introduction to Slow Stitching: making a meditation roll

This half-day workshop is a gentle introduction to slow stitching, ideal for anyone who is new to sewing or lacks confidence with needle and thread.

You’ll create a simple meditation roll — a long, hand-stitched strip of fabric that can be rolled and unrolled, inviting you to pause, focus and reflect as you work with it. Using layered fabrics and materials, you’ll stitch at your own pace, keeping the process as simple or as detailed as you like.

We’ll begin with a short grounding exercise to help you settle into the session, and finish with a gentle meditation so you leave feeling calm and relaxed. No previous sewing experience is needed — this workshop is open to everyone and focuses on enjoying the process rather than getting things “right.”

    Suitable for beginners

    • Maximum of 6 people per workshop, so lots of 1 to 1 support
    • Half a day in North Yorkshire
    • Includes materials, drinks and homemade cake.

    Exploring Slow Stitching

Explore slow sewing by making a simple picture roll using fabric and stitch. We’ll take inspiration from nature, looking closely at plants, textures, colours and shapes in the garden. These observations will help guide your ideas and designs.

You’ll work with naturally dyed fabrics, layering pieces of cloth and stitching them together to create your own textile artwork. You can arrange, overlap and change the fabrics as you go, responding to how the materials feel and work together. Stitching is used like drawing, helping you record what you notice and what feels important to you.

This workshop is calm and unhurried, with an emphasis on enjoying the process rather than aiming for a perfect result. By the end, you’ll have a unique stitched piece that reflects your connection to nature and the time you’ve spent observing and making.

We start the day with a grounding exercise and end with a gentle meditation.

    • Suitable for confident beginners
    • Maximum of 6 people per workshop, so lots of 1 to 1 support
    • Full day course 10am-4pm
    • Includes materials, drinks and homemade cake. Please bring a packed lunch.

    Narrative Slow Stitching

Narrative Slow Stitching is a one-day workshop focused on using stitch to explore your personal thoughts and feelings about nature.

We’ll begin by spending quiet time in the garden, sitting in stillness and observing what’s around us. Through gentle prompts, meditation and reflection, you’ll notice what draws your attention and how it makes you feel. You can capture these thoughts using words, sketches or simple notes.

Using fabric and stitch, you’ll then translate these reflections into a stitched piece. Stitching is used slowly and mindfully, allowing space to record emotions, memories and responses to the natural world.

This is a calm, supportive workshop with an emphasis on wellbeing and process rather than finished results. By the end of the day, you’ll have a personal stitched work that reflects your experience, along with time spent slowing down, noticing and making.

    • Suitable for beginners
    • Maximum of 6 people per workshop, so lots of 1 to 1 support
    • Full day course 10am-4pm
    • Includes materials, drinks and homemade cake. Please bring a packed lunch.

    Winter Wellbeing Stitching Workshop
